South Nahanni Unesco World Heritage Site? Glaciers? Hot springs? Ram Plateau? Ragged Range with lakes like jewels? Virginia Falls? Observe game? Take stunning photographs? Pick Blueberries? Follow meandering wilderness rivers? Hunt for fossils? Dance light-footed over scrubby berries, pale lichen, patches of grass and grey shale? Explore Karsts, Tufa mounds, sink holes, 4000 feet deep canyons?
Which one to pick? All. Remember, you are not carrying your household on your back, just your water bottle and spare jacket.
The area consists of mountains ranges, northern spruce and wild rivers. Stitched into this immensity are Karsts (Ram Plateau), the largest glacier field in NWT (Ragged Range), the small eyes of stunningly green lakes, the spires of mountains with the Cirque of Unclimbables, the tufa mounds at Rabbitkettle Lake, Virginia Falls - the highest in Canada-, and the snaking green of the South Nahanni way down deep in 4,000 feet (1,2 km) high canyon walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Fossils: Former ocean reefs of the Devonian with ammonites, different types of corals, sea shells, trilobites
A wealth of scenery: high alpine, valleys, rivers, gravel bars, shale slopes, far away vistas, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, rocky canyons, grey undulating mountains scored through with the colours of the rainbow
Cirque of Unclimables: a mountain climbers dream with the sheer walls of the Lotus Tower to scale above a green, flowering, gorgeous alpine meadow surrounded by grey spires
Hot Springs: soak in your very own hot spring amongst wildflowers under towering peaks
Geological formations: ranging from karsts to sedimentary to granite, hot springs, tufa mounds, small caves, sink holes, arches, glaciers, to the antecedent river of the South Nahanni and its 4000 ft deep canyons
Wildlife: Dall sheep, mountain goats, caribou, moose, wolves, bears, smaller game
Solitude and true wilderness: South Nahanni is not a wilderness you can visit for the weekend. There are no trails, signs or maps either. This is true, spectacular wild country. You will be the only people in hundreds of miles of land, maybe even the first people. There are no traces of mankind. You are visiting a land that has not changed since the last ice age – and it is all yours to explore.
